About

We are seven friends who met while studying for our Masters at the University of Edinburgh. Now spread across India, France and Scotland we have created this collective to share our own ideas and create a platform where others from across the world can express their passion about the environment, share their stories and help build a community of people who want to create a better future.

Embra is a space in which to talk about all elements of sustainability. Often, addressing climate change is reduced to counting units of CO2 and other greenhouse gases and Net Zero targets, and while of course this is important, true sustainability marries ecological, economic and social principles. With this in mind, our content will cover a broad range of issues, from the physical effects of climate change, energy and finance, to themes of social justice, biodiversity and education.

The name Embra comes from a colloquial term for Edinburgh, the place that brought us together, stoked our passion for the environment and connected us with so many amazing people.

Who we are

Alice

Alice is an Edinburgh native but has spent time working and studying in the Dominican Republic, Spain and Canada. She studied Geography at the University of Glasgow before completing a part-time Masters in Environmental Sustainability at the University of Edinburgh.

Alice specialises in urban sustainability and currently works as an environmental consultant in WSP’s Net Zero Cities team. She is also a freelance writer/researcher at the Local Government Information Unit and is particularly interested in urban climate adaptation and social impact.

Alice currently lives in Edinburgh and at the weekend you’ll frequently find her climbing one of Scotland’s 282 Munros (Scottish mountains over 3,000 feet), making linocut prints (some of which you can see in Creative Corner) or eating chips on a local beach.

Martha

Martha is a climate and environmental justice researcher, writer and consultant. Originally from the Scottish Borders, she worked and travelled around the world before being drawn back to Edinburgh for further study. She has an MSc in Environment and Development from the University of Edinburgh and an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences (Zoology) from the University of Cambridge.

Outside of work Martha spends her time ceaselessly admiring - and sometimes being battered by - the great outdoors. She loves nature-related photography and writing short stories. She will happily talk to you for hours about her favourite animals which range from the biggest of whales to the tiniest wee bugs.

Nishtha

Nishtha moved to Edinburgh to pursue an MSc in Carbon Management at the University of Edinburgh in 2018. Before coming to Edinburgh, she was a social entrepreneur in India and worked towards reviving dying Indian art forms by incorporating them into contemporary products for almost six years. She previously worked for Deloitte Consulting for three years.

She studied Engineering in Electronics and Communications at undergraduate before completing an MBA in Operations & Strategy from the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow.

Nishtha grew up in a very small and remote town in India but has since lived in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Edinburgh. She is intrigued by people and their stories. In her free time, you’ll find her either on a long walk or indulging in one of the many forms of storytelling - books, movies, theatre, seminars - as an audience. Her interests are facilitating energy and economic transitions for a carbon neutral world.

Fiona

Fiona came to Scotland in 2018 to learn about environmental sustainability through a Masters at the University of Edinburgh. Here, she mainly focused on citizen and youth engagement, environmental governance and political ecology. Previously, she studied Liberal Arts and Sciences in Freiburg, the so-called “green capital” of Germany, as well as in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania in the US.

Today, Fiona lives in Belgium, where she enjoys the country’s famous waffles and works for the European Parliament contributing to the organisation of a democracy festival for young people. Outside of work she attempts to defy Scotland’s and Belgium’s weather reputations and maximise her intake of sunlight preferably while running, hiking or playing Frisbee with friends.

Luisa

Luisa is originally from Pasto, a small Colombian city at 8,291 feet above sea level, located at the foot of a volcano in the Andean Highlands. Having previously worked in development studies, particularly on gender and race inequalities in entrepreneurship and education in Colombia, she came to Edinburgh in 2020 to pursue an MSc in Environment and Development focusing on sustainable food systems, food security and sovereignty.

She currently works as a Food and Enterprise Consultant providing business support in sustainability & circular economy, LCA and carbon assessment. Luisa is deeply interested in transforming food systems to address food inequalities and environmental degradation.

Her hobbies include watching and playing football, exploring new food places in the city - although she does not consider herself a foodie, going on walks, live music and linguistics.

Rosanna

Rosanna moved to the Scottish Borders when she was 5 and now lives in London, dividing her time between the city and Scotland. She works as a researcher at the consultancy A Future Worth Living In and the University of Strathclyde. Since the summer of 2022 she has been a Director of the Shieling Project in the Highlands. Before this she studied French & Sociology at the University of Warwick, Environment & Development as a Masters at the University of Edinburgh, and narrowly avoided a career as a corporate lawyer.

Rosanna has worked and travelled in Martinique, France, India, Nepal and the Middle East and her particular interests are sustainable rural development, the biodiversity crisis and climate justice. She has many hobbies that she pursues with enthusiasm but limited ability, including growing, hill walking/running, drawing and bouldering.

Sonya.jpg

Sonya

Sonya is based in Glasgow but grew up in Canada in an Indian household. She works for Students Organising for Sustainability and Teach the Future Scotland as a project manager.

She has a BA from McGill University in Montreal, an MSc from University of Edinburgh and has also studied at Bogazici University in Istanbul. She is enthusiastic about engaging diverse stakeholders to collectively realise climate justice. In the past, she has worked with the Edinburgh South Asian community on sustainability programmes and led student research teams in developing a sustainable food standard for universities and colleges in Canada.

She believes climate justice is imperative to real climate action and is learning how to advance justice in her personal and professional life.

In her spare time, she enjoys video-calling her two-year old niece as well as reading, cooking and writing (often attempting to combine all three).
