Buchanan Street is a street in Glasgow City Centre, or ‘Merchant City’. It is named after a famous merchant, Andrew Buchanan, who made his fortune from tobacco plantations in Virginia, worked on by slaves. Glasgow was known as the ‘Second City of the Empire’ for its shipbuilding, industry and port.
