It does what it says on the tin: a tool-lending library in Edinburgh where you can borrow from thousands of tools. And if you don’t know how to use the tools they share, don’t worry – they also bring members together to build and learn by sharing skills and knowledge with one another. You can also volunteer, helping with the running of the library, assisting with events and building community links.
The people at the Edinburgh Remakery want to build a zero waste world. They take in broken electrical equipment, furniture and other goods that need fixing, while also running workshops to help those who want to avoid expensive repairs, and learn the skills to fix or up-cycle items themselves!
The Turing Trust supports education in sub-Saharan Africa by refurbishing and reusing donated computers and improving teacher training using ICT. They provide skills development in the UK by teaching citizens how to fix computers which are sent to Malawi and Ghana. They have reused an incredible 4,200 computers, allowing more than 41, 000 students to gain a digital education, while contributing to to an environmentally friendly society and reducing waste. Fresh Start is a charity supporting those who have been homeless in various ways. They provide practical and emotional support, assisting them with resettling in their community, doing up their new accommodation and in developing life skills through community gardening, cooking courses and training initiatives (they are SQA accredited).
